History

Wheat Ridge was once known as Carnation City immediately prior to the 1858 Gold Rush, as the place had become a center for agriculture in the budding Territory of Colorado. As Denver expanded in the 1940s and 1950s, Carnation City and its neighboring unincorporated communities started to fill up vacant lots with housing that would cater to the growing workforce. Eventually, the citizens of the area voted for incorporation in 1969 to ease off the rising annexation pressures from nearby established towns and cities.
