There are parks, golf courses, cultural programming and several recreation areas near the city, such as the Lakewood Cultural Center, Bear Creek Lake Park, Lakewood Heritage Center, Foothills Golf Course, and Hayden Park on Green Mountain among others. Within Lakewood you will find the Belmar shopping center. The new shopping area has great outdoor shopping, summer street festivals, a winter ice skating rink and great places to eat. The Light Rail west line runs through Lakewood and 6th Ave offers great transportation into Downtown Denver.

History

Lakewood started up as a weekend getaway west of Colfax Avenue for many of Denver’s well-off elite, after Colorado Central Railroad president WAH Loveland established a home that he can live in during his advanced years in the area. It eventually became a part of The Loop, a section of the Denver Tramway that serviced Denver, Golden, and Lakewood, in 1893.

Remington would set up an ammunition factory in the town in 1941. It was the biggest government contract for the state at that time.

Lakewood would successfully petition for incorporation more than two decades later, in 1969.

Amenities and Famous Landmarks

Lakewood’s location within the old Tramway Loop puts it in within close proximity of various shops, businesses, hospitals, and higher learning institutions in both Golden and Denver, not to mention its own set of schools, primary care centers and establishments. Lakewood still retains several key transport hubs that allows easy access to and from the city.

This establishment was created to replace the closing Villa Italia Mall. It offers an assortment of shops, boutiques, and amusement centers that families can enjoy.

This structure houses much of Lakewood’s colorful history. It also houses some artifacts from the old Lakewood Mansion, a heritage structure that was built prior to the city’s incorporation.

Those residents with children can choose from a wide range of schools that serve Lakewood. The public schools are a part of the Jefferson County School District. Some of these schools are:

  • Bear Creek Elementary School
  • Jefferson County Open School
