Sloan’s Lake is a park, a body of water and a neighborhood located in Denver, Colorado. The 177-acre community is considered as the second largest park in the city. You can find a lake at the center of this community that contributes to its cozy ambiance.
Sloan’s Lake has a population of approximately 52,000 in 2014. It is located at the western extremity of Denver’s city limits, contiguous to the suburbs of Lakewood, Wheat Ridge and Edgewater. Its boundaries are 17th Avenue on the south, Sheridan Boulevard on the west, 26th Avenue to the north and Raleigh Street on the east.
The lake itself did not come about naturally. It is said that the lake was formed in 1866 after homesteader Thomas F. Sloan tried to dig a well in the land to support the irrigation of his farm, but accidentally tapped into an underground aquifer that filled the lower parts of South Golden Road over a few days. Other homesteads would set up near Sloan’s home before the turn of the century. Major developments would later be fueled by the arrival of better transportation across the city. Construction has slowed down in recent years, but a recent plan to convert an abandoned hospital property into a row of condominiums is underway.
Sloan’s lake is right next to a host of shopping spots, schools, and primary care centers located in strategic places. Within the neighborhood, there are a host of courts and other entertainment facilities.
You can jog, bike or walk around the Sloan’s Lake. Fishing and motor boating, water skiing, kayaking and stand-up-paddle boarding are the things you can enjoy on the lake itself. Recreational areas such as basketball and tennis courts are also visible in the neighborhood. People celebrate the Asian-American culture and civilization annually in this place. Some of the events celebrated in this place is Dragon Boat Festival.
The community’s namesake park was a recent addition to the area, being added in 2002 to add some more beauty to the neighborhood. It now occupies parts of the living area and most of the lake, and is a typical weekend destination.
Not to be confused with the nearby Highland Districts, Highlands Square is the center of the Sloan’s Lake community, with most of its night life being centered in the area. It hosts a good number of restaurants, bars, boutiques and taverns.
Sloan’s Lake retains many of its 1930’s architecture among its homes, with Tudors, Victorians, and bungalows dotting the streets. Newer luxury developments have introduced post-modern designed homes in the mix. Homes are priced between $510,000 and $800,000. Sloan’s Lake is perfect for people who are looking for a neighborhood with quiet streets and a dazzling park and a lake that can cater to a lot of activities.
